REVER MED
Following a strategy of support to sustainable development based on the main assets and weaknesses of the Occidental Mediterranean area (MEDOC), REVER MED aims at completing the “Greenways for Europe” network developed for the North West Metropilitan Area of Europe (in the framework of program Interreg IIC NWMA) in Portugal, Spain, France and Italy. REVER MED’s first objective is to set up the backbone of an autonomous network for non-motorised transport, mainly made of greenways. Estimates provide us with a network length over 10.000 km, ranging from Southern Portugal to Southern Italy, along coastal zones, but with important incursions into inland zones of the MED area.
The network formed in this way allows an offer of continuous long range routes but also a local web for proximity displacement and leisure. Some specific questions about the features of the target regions, like topography and orography, issues related to tourism pressure or complementarity public transportation/bicycle, especially intermodality train/bicycle, along with other issues concerning the different legal situations of the countries and regions (infrastructure recovery, management and maintenance) will have to be studied closely.
The second objective is to encourage experience exchange between territorial management authorities, such as national governments, regions, associations and the private sector (transport companies) who already have developed a know-how in the transport, soft mobility and greenways area. Like for REVER NWMA, coordination was ensured by EGWA.
The project is included into the framework of programme Interreg IIIB MEDOC.
