In this way, we contribute to the dissemination of best practices, which take part of the EGWA’s pledges of the transition pathway for tourism, on different topics

EGWA’s pledges for co-implementation of the transition Tourism pathway highlight the importance of greenways, and active mobility such as cycling and walking, for tourism and everyday life, and the need of safe and accessible non-motorised infrastructures.

  • We strongly encourage you to get to know and enjoy these awarded greenways on foot, by bike, or wheeling.
  • We also encourage visitors to share their experience of their tour through social networks.
  • Be inspired by these greenways and replicate their practices in your own territory!

The European Greenways Award is organized every two years from 2003. The objective is to promote examples of best practices and to support their replication for other greenways all over Europe. The European Greenways Award is granted only to greenways under the Lille Declaration, as well as to initiatives already in existence.

11th European Greenways Award (EGA) 2023 was organised by EGWA in co-operation with Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and the Associazione Italiana Greenways, with the patronage of the Comune di Roma.

The 11th European Greenways Award 2023 recognised examples of greenways best practices in three categories:

  1. A) Excellence awards
  2. B) Exemplary initiatives
  3. C) Special award, Green transition in greenways (part of the activities promoted by EGWA in the co-implementation of the Transition Pathway for Tourism (Togeher4Tourism)

EGWA was delighted to receive 32 nominations from 13 countries, and is very grateful to all participants in the award.

The meeting of the independent International jury to select the winners took place on 12 July 2023.

The award winners were announced on 20 November 2023, at the fantastic Rome City Hall in the Campidoglio.

As part of the awards, a Conference on ‘Greenways and Sustainable Tourism in Europe’ was organised. 21 speakers from all over Europe, including representatives of the winning candidates, jury members and other international experts, shared real-life experiences linked to 11 countries and Europe as a whole, with some 100 participants.

The winning and finalist entries are presented on the document.  The conference presentations provide further information on most of the award winners.

A technical visit to “Parco lineare”, an urban greenway in Rome, completed the 11th EGA celebration.

EGWA sincerely thanks the co-organisers in Italy, the members of the Jury, and all participants for responding to the call, as well as the participants at the Award gala in Rome, and the members of EGWA, for making this Award possible.
